Historical context

Galerius, originally Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, ruled the Roman Empire from 305 to 311. Having previously served as caesar under Diocletian within the Tetrarchy, he campaigned against the Sasanian Empire and across the Danube against the Carpi. He became augustus in 305 following Diocletian's abdication, ruling during a period marked by usurpers and the dissolution of the Tetrarchic system until his death in May 311.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced under Galerius at the Serdica mint, the city where he later issued the Edict of Serdica in 311 to end the Diocletianic Persecution. The obverse features the emperor's laureate head accompanied by the legend "GAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Virtus advancing right, carrying a transverse spear in the right hand and a trophy over the left shoulder, paired with the legend "VIRTVTI - EXERCITVS" or "VIRTVTI E-XERCITVS".
