Aureus in gold struck at Siscia under Constantius Chlorus, AD 305–AD 307, catalogued as RIC VI Siscia 149. Obverse: Head of Galerius, laureate, right. Reverse: Galerius, laureate, togate, standing left, holding globe in right hand and short baton in left hand.

Historical context

Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius, known as Constantius Chlorus, served as caesar from 293 until becoming senior augustus of the Roman Empire from May 305 until his death in July 306. His colleague Galerius, who had distinguished himself campaigning against the Sasanian Empire and the Carpi, was likewise promoted to augustus upon Diocletian's abdication in 305. Struck at Siscia, this gold aureus depicts Galerius during the collaborative reign of the Tetrarchy, before civil wars destabilised the imperial college.
