Aureus in gold struck at Siscia under Licinius, AD 308–AD 309, catalogued as RIC VI Siscia 189. Obverse: Head of Maximian, laureate, right. Reverse: Jupiter, chlamys hanging from left shoulder, standing left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand; to left by feet, eagle.

Obverse legend: MAXIMIANVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: IOVI C-ON-SERVAT or IOVI CO-N-SERVAT or IOVI CON-S-ERVAT.

Historical context

Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting for most of that time as the colleague and rival of Constantine I. In November 308, at the Conference of Carnuntum, Diocletian and Galerius forced the former emperor Maximian to renounce the imperial title he had reassumed. Maximian, who had previously served as Augustus from 286 to 305 alongside Diocletian, was honoured on this issue struck at Siscia between AD 308 and AD 309 during Licinius's early rule.
