Historical context

This bronze piece was struck at the mint of Siscia under the authority of Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During the majority of his reign, Licinius was both the colleague and rival of Constantine I, with whom he co-authored the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians across the empire, before his eventual defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324.

Produced within the Roman Empire, this AE2 coinage features an obverse displaying the laureate head of Maximian accompanied by the legend "IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts a nude genius wearing a modius with a chlamys draped over the left shoulder, standing left while holding a patera in the right hand and a cornucopiae in the left hand, framed by the inscription "GENIO CA-ESARIS".
