Historical context

This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his reign, Licinius governed alongside Constantine I as both a colleague and a rival. Although the two emperors co-authored the Edict of Milan, conflict eventually broke out between them, culminating in Licinius's defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and his subsequent execution.

Produced at the mint of Siscia, this AE3 issue features Constantine I on the obverse, styled with the inscription "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the Roman deity Jupiter standing with an eagle at his feet, holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "IOVI CON-SERVATORI" or "IOVI CONS-ERVATORI".
