Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having first been appointed Caesar in 285. As Augustus, he shared power with his superior and co-emperor, Diocletian.

Produced under Maximian's authority at the Siscia mint, this silver piece depicts the head of Diocletian alongside the obverse legend DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The reverse design presents Diocletian, Maximian, Constantius Chlorus, and Galerius in drapery, performing a sacrifice over a tripod before an archway set within a seven-turreted enclosure. This composition accompanies the reverse legend VIRTVS - MILITVM, featuring the four imperial colleagues who governed the empire together.
