Historical context

Maximinus Daza claimed the title of Augustus in 310, sharing and contesting authority in the Roman Empire with Licinius, who reigned from 308 to 324. Although the two emperors engaged in rivalry that ended when Maximinus was routed at the Battle of Tzirallum in 313, this gold aureus was struck between AD 311 and AD 313 under Licinius in the name of Maximinus Augustus. It was produced at Thessalonica, a major city in Macedonia founded in 315 BC by Cassander.
