Historical context

Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During this period, power was shared and frequently contested with Maximinus Daza, who claimed the title of augustus in 310 before their rivalry culminated in open conflict and Maximinus's defeat at the Battle of Tzirallum in 313. This bronze piece was issued under Licinius from the mint at Thessalonica, a prominent city founded in 315 BC in Central Macedonia.
