Historical context

Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting as both colleague and rival to Constantine I before his eventual defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in AD 324. During his reign, he issued this coinage at the mint of Thessalonica, an ancient city founded in 315 BC in northern Greece that served as a major political and administrative centre in Macedonia.
