Historical context

Maxentius (Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius) ruled Italy and North Africa as Roman emperor from 306 until his death on 28 October 312, when he drowned in the Tiber following defeat by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. The son of Maximian, Maxentius relied on the support of the Senate in Rome while facing ongoing civil warfare against rival rulers. This coin was minted at Ticinum, an ancient city where a Roman imperial mint operated from 275 until its closure by Constantine the Great in 326.
