Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death on 28 October 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. He was the son of Maximian and the son-in-law of Galerius. Not recognised as legitimate by fellow emperors, he faced civil war against Constantine, who defeated him at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, where he drowned in the Tiber.

Struck at Ticinum, this bronze AE2 names Maxentius on the obverse as "IMP MAXENTIVS P F AVG". As the last emperor permanently residing in Rome, Maxentius carried out significant building projects to restore the capital. The reverse bears the inscription "CONSERV - VRB SVAE" around an architectural design showing a tetrastyle temple containing Roma seated with a globe and sceptre, crowned by a winged Victory while a bound captive sits between them.
