Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian, holding the rank of Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 to 305. After campaigning along the Rhine, in Hispania, and against Berber incursions in Mauretania until 298, Maximian relocated to Italy, where he resided until his abdication on 1 May 305 at Diocletian's behest.

Struck at the mint of Ticinum, this coin is an aureus, the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the first century BC until its replacement by the solidus in the early fourth century AD. The piece bears the obverse legend MAXIMIANVS AVGVSTVS accompanying the emperor's laureate portrait, with the reverse displaying the text XX / MAXI/MIAN/I AVG / SMT enclosed within a wreath.
