Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum following the death of his father in 306, he engaged in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately emerging as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

This bronze AE3 coin was produced at the mint of Ticinum under Constantine's authority. The obverse bears his portrait alongside the imperial title "CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Sol standing with a raised right hand and holding a globe, accompanied by the inscription "SOLI INVI-C-TO COMITI". Although Constantine eventually converted to Christianity and decriminalised Christian practice, he lived much of his life as a pagan.
