Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having previously been Caesar from 285 to 286. He shared the title of Augustus with his co-emperor Diocletian, who was his political superior. Maximian spent much of his reign on campaign across the Western empire, including operations on the Rhine frontier, before eventually abdicating alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305 and retiring to southern Italy.

Struck in silver at the mint of Ticinum, this coin carries an obverse legend reading MAXIMIANVS AVG.
