Historical context

Diocletian became Roman emperor in 284, stabilising the Roman Empire and ending the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he appointed his fellow officer Maximian as Augustus to rule the Western Empire, while Diocletian remained senior Augustus in the east. Diocletian later instituted the Tetrarchy in 293, delegating authority across imperial divisions until his abdication alongside Maximian in 305. Ticinum, an ancient city in Gallia Transpadana, housed a mint transferred from Mediolanum under Aurelian in 275.
