Historical context
Maximian served as Roman emperor between 286 and 305, having earlier been appointed Caesar in 285. He shared the rank of Augustus with Diocletian, his co-emperor and superior. Following military campaigns along the Rhine, in Hispania, and against Berber incursions in Mauretania, Maximian departed in 298 for Italy, where he resided until his abdication alongside Diocletian on 1 May 305.
This bronze fractional coinage was produced at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Maximian. Although issued under Maximian's authority, the obverse portrays Galerius, designated by the legend "GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB C", while the reverse displays "VOT / • / X" enclosed within a wreath.
