Historical context

Constantius Chlorus became augustus of the western Roman Empire in May 305 upon the abdication of Diocletian. Under the Tetrarchic system, Flavius Valerius Severus, known as Severus II, served as caesar before rising to emperor in 306. The mint at Ticinum had been established in 275 after being transferred from Mediolanum by Emperor Aurelian. This gold aureus was struck at Ticinum between AD 305 and AD 306 under Constantius, bearing the portrait and title of Severus as caesar.
