Historical context

Constantius I, also known as Constantius Chlorus, was an original member of the Tetrarchy created by Diocletian. After serving as caesar from 293, he ruled as augustus from May 305 until his sudden death at Eboracum in July 306. A distinguished soldier who rose through the army, he campaigned along the Rhine frontier and ruled Gaul and Britain before becoming senior emperor.

Struck at the mint of Ticinum, this bronze AE1 piece bears the obverse imperial title "IMP C CONSTANTIVS P F AVG", marking his rank as augustus.
