Historical context

Flavius Valerius Severus, also known as Severus II, served as Roman emperor from 306 to 307 within the Tetrarchy. He governed the western half of the Roman Empire alongside Constantine I. Severus II spent the majority of his brief reign engaged in a civil war against the usurper Maxentius, who ultimately killed him in September 307 and took over Italy.

Produced under Severus II at the mint of Ticinum, this bronze AE1 piece features the emperor on both sides. The obverse presents his laureate portrait accompanied by the legend "IMP C SEVERVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Severus II draped and cuirassed, galloping on horseback to spear a kneeling adversary while carrying a shield, above a second enemy lying prostrate on the ground, surrounded by the legend "VIRTVS AV-GG ET CAESS NN".
