Historical context

This bronze issue was struck at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Flavius Valerius Severus, also known as Severus II. A member of the Tetrarchy, Severus II served as Roman emperor from 306 until 307. During his brief reign, he shared governance of the western half of the Roman Empire alongside Constantine I, while spending most of the period engaged in a civil war against the usurper Maxentius.

Produced as an AE1 denomination, the coin features the obverse legend "CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES" accompanying the laureate bust of Constantine I. The reverse bears the inscription "VIRTVS AV-GG ET CAESS NN" and depicts Constantine I on horseback galloping right, spearing a kneeling enemy with his right hand and bearing a shield on his left arm, with a second enemy lying prostrate on the ground.
