Historical context
Maxentius, the son of former emperor Maximian, took power as Roman emperor in 306 and ruled in Italy and North Africa until his death in 312. Although unrecognized by his fellow imperial colleagues, he held the recognition of the Senate in Rome and devoted significant attention to the ancient capital and its traditions. This coin was produced in AD 307 at Ticinum, an ancient city in Gallia Transpadana where a Roman mint had operated since being transferred from Mediolanum by Aurelian in 275.
