Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until 312, holding Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome, although fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate. His later reign involved civil war, where he allied with Maximinus against Licinius and Constantine I before his defeat and death by drowning at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312.

Struck at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Maxentius, this bronze AE2 piece names Constantine I on the obverse as "CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES". The reverse portrays Hercules standing left, fighting a lion with a club to the right, accompanied by the inscription "HERCVLI CONSERVAT CAES".
