Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312. Although he held authority across Italy and North Africa and secured recognition from the Senate in Rome, fellow emperors did not acknowledge him as legitimate. The later years of his reign involved civil war against Licinius and Constantine, concluding with his defeat and death by drowning at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312.

This bronze AE2 coin was produced at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Maxentius. Struck in the name of Constantine I, the obverse bears the laureate portrait of Constantine alongside the inscription "CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Hercules standing left, leaning his club against his left leg whilst strangling a lion, accompanied by the legend "VIRTVS PER-PETVA AVG".
