Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian, holding the title of Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 to 305. Maximian established his imperial residence at Trier, although he spent much of his reign campaigning along the Rhine frontier and elsewhere. At Diocletian's behest, Maximian later abdicated his imperial office on 1 May 305.

Produced at the mint of Trier under Maximian's authority, this silver issue bears the obverse legend DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The reverse design features Diocletian, Maximian, Constantius Chlorus, and Galerius sacrificing over a tripod before a turreted enclosure gate, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVS - MILITVM. This composition represents the rulers operating together during the imperial college's joint rule, with Constantius serving as Maximian's subordinate while Galerius was Diocletian's successor.
