Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor between 286 and 305, sharing the title of Augustus alongside Diocletian. Although he established his residence at Trier, he spent much of his reign actively campaigning against rebel movements in Gaul and Germanic tribes along the Rhine frontier. He later abdicated in 305 alongside Diocletian before becoming embroiled in further imperial conflicts in the western empire.

This bronze AE1 was struck at the Trier mint under Maximian's authority. The obverse features the laureate and cuirassed bust of Galerius, accompanied by the inscription "MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES". On the reverse, the goddess Fortuna is depicted seated while holding a rudder over a globe or wheel and a cornucopiae in her left hand, accompanied by the legend "FORTVNAE REDVCI AVGG NN", "FORTVNAE R-EDVCI AVGG NN", or "FORTVNAE RE-DVCI AVGG NN".
