Historical context

Maximian was Roman emperor from 286 to 305, sharing the title of Augustus with Diocletian. He established his residence at Trier, though he spent much of his reign on campaign along the Rhine frontier and elsewhere. Constantius served as his subordinate, notably campaigning against the rebel Allectus in Britain while Maximian guarded the Rhine. Maximian eventually abdicated on 1 May 305, transferring the Augustan office to Constantius.

Struck at Trier, this gold coin represents the aureus, which served as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. The obverse depicts Constantius Chlorus with the legend CONSTANTIVS NOB C, acknowledging his rank as Caesar.
