Historical context
Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside Diocletian, holding the rank of Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 until his abdication on 1 May 305. He established his residence at Trier, an ancient city on the Moselle that served as one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy period. Much of his reign was spent campaigning against Germanic tribes along the Rhine frontier and suppressing rebellions in Gaul.
