Historical context

Severus II was Roman emperor and a member of the Tetrarchy from 306 to 307, sharing control of the western half of the empire with Constantine I during a brief reign dominated by conflict against Maxentius. This coin honours the former Augustus Maximian, who had abdicated on 1 May 305 alongside Diocletian after ruling from 286 to 305. The piece was produced at Trier, a tetrarchic capital where Maximian had formerly established his residence.
