Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. The son of Flavius Constantius, he had served under Diocletian and Galerius before campaigning in Britannia. Following his father's death in 306, Constantine was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum. He subsequently engaged in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against rival emperors, ultimately emerging as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this bronze AE2 piece reflects the imperial coinage produced under Constantine's authority. While Constantine later became renowned as the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, having lived much of his life as a pagan, this issue features traditional polytheistic imagery. The reverse depicts the nude deity Mars holding a spear and shield, accompanied by the dedication "MARTI PATRI CONSERVATORI", alongside the obverse identifying Constantine with the title "FL VAL CONSTANTINVS NOB C".
