Historical context

The son of Flavius Constantius, he campaigned in the east and in Britannia before being proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 upon his father's death. He subsequently fought in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately emerging as sole ruler of the empire by 324.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this bronze AE2 piece belongs to the imperial coinage of Constantine I. The obverse presents the ruler with the legend "FL VAL CONSTANTINVS NOB C". The reverse depicts Constantine I standing draped and cuirassed, holding a standard in each hand, accompanied by the legend "PRINCIPI - IVVE-NTVTIS", "PRINCIPI - IV-VE-NTVTIS", or "PRINCIPI - IV-VE-NTVT-IS".
