Historical context
Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. After campaigning in the eastern provinces under Diocletian and Galerius, he travelled to the province of Britannia in AD 305 to campaign with his father, Flavius Constantius. Following the death of his father in 306, Constantine was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum, subsequently fighting civil wars against other rulers of the Tetrarchy.
This bronze AE3 piece was produced at the mint of Trier under the authority of Constantine I. It features his portrait and the obverse legend "FL VAL CONSTANTINVS N C", identifying him by his imperial titles. The reverse displays the inscription "VO/TIS / X" enclosed within a wreath.
