Historical context

After the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, Constantine was proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306. Following victories in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against the emperors Maxentius and Licinius, he eventually became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

Produced at the mint of Trier, this bronze AE2 issue features the obverse inscription "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Constantine I standing draped and cuirassed, holding a standard in each hand, accompanied by the reverse legend "PRINCIPI - IVVE-NTVTIS" or "PRINCIPI - IV-VENTVTIS".
