Historical context

Constantine I served as Roman emperor from AD 306 until 337. Proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum following the death of his father in 306, he subsequently fought in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately emerging as the sole ruler of the empire by 324. His authority was recognised across various imperial centres, with this gold coinage struck at the mint of Trier.

Upon his accession, Constantine introduced the solidus to combat inflation, replacing the earlier aureus. Struck from highly pure gold, the solidus served as a major currency of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. On this issue, the obverse bears his title with the inscription CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, while the reverse legend VBIQVE - VICTOR accompanies imagery of the emperor holding a transverse spear and globe, flanked by seated captives, aligning with his military campaigns along the Roman frontiers.
