Historical context
Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306. Following civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius, he eventually emerged as the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. During his reign, Constantine restructured the imperial administration and pursued active military campaigns against tribes along the Roman frontiers, including the Alemanni and the Franks.
To combat inflation, Constantine introduced the solidus, a highly pure gold denomination that replaced the aureus and served as the standard currency for commerce. Struck at Trier, this issue features the obverse legend CONSTANTINVS P F AVG and a reverse depicting a seated personification labelled ALAMANNIA beside a trophy, with a bow and arrow below. The reverse legend reads GAVDIVM ROMANORVM or GAVDIVM RO-MANORVM, referencing Roman rejoicing in connection with campaigns against the Alemanni frontier tribe.
