Historical context
Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately becoming the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.
Produced at the mint of Trier, this bronze AE2 coinage features an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the title "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the deity Sol holding a globe and raising his right hand, alongside the legend "SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI". Although Constantine eventually converted to Christianity and played a pivotal role in decriminalising Christian practice across the empire through the Edict of Milan, he lived much of his life as a pagan.
