Historical context

Licinius was Roman emperor from 308 to 324, ruling as both the colleague and rival of Constantine I. He governed during the period of religious change that included the co-authoring of the Edict of Milan, remaining in power until his defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324. This gold aureus, the principal Roman gold denomination prior to its replacement by the solidus, was struck for him in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria.
