Historical context

Constantine I ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having emerged victorious in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Upon his accession, he restructured the government and enacted administrative and economic reforms to strengthen the empire. This bronze coin was struck between AD 325 and AD 326 at the ancient mint of Alexandria, a major Mediterranean seaport and cultural centre in Egypt originally founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great.
