Historical context

Constantine I, who reigned as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, emerged as sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. His mother Helena, a Greek woman of low birth from Bithynia, was later canonised as a saint. Struck between AD 325 and AD 326 under Constantine's authority, this bronze coin was produced at the ancient seaport and administrative centre of Alexandria in Egypt.
