Historical context
Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting for most of that time as both colleague and rival to Constantine I. This bronze piece was struck between AD 313 and AD 314 at Alexandria, Egypt's major Mediterranean seaport founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. During this period, Licinius shared the governance of the Roman Empire, notably co-authoring the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians.
