Historical context
For the majority of his rule, Licinius served as both the colleague and the rival of Constantine I. Together, the two co-authored the Edict of Milan, which granted official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire, before Licinius was defeated at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324.
This bronze coinage, catalogued as an AE2 or AE3, was produced at the mint of Antioch in Syria under the authority of Licinius. The obverse depicts his draped and cuirassed laureate bust, accompanied by the inscription "IMP LIC LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG NN" alongside an image of Jupiter holding Victory on a globe and leaning on a sceptre, flanked by an eagle with a wreath.
