Historical context

Valerius Licinianus Licinius was Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his rule, he acted as both the colleague and the rival of Constantine I, collaborating with him to co-author the Edict of Milan, which granted official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire. Licinius was ultimately defeated by Constantine at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and was subsequently executed on his orders.

This gold aureus was produced at the mint of Antioch in Syria. The aureus served as the principal gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, when the solidus superseded it. The coin bears the obverse legend "LICIN-IVS P F AVG" alongside a portrait of the emperor, while the reverse depicts Jupiter seated upon a platform inscribed "SIC X / SIC XX", holding Victory on a globe and accompanied by an eagle, under the legend "IOVI CONS - LICINI AVG".
