Historical context

After being acclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, establishing himself as sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. To combat inflation and strengthen the imperial economy, Constantine introduced the solidus, a highly pure gold coin replacing the aureus. The city of Antioch in northern Syria, capital of Roman Syria, operated as a major imperial mint where this coinage was produced.
