Historical context
Constantine introduced the solidus, a highly pure gold denomination designed to combat inflation. Replacing the aureus, the solidus became the standard currency for centuries and served as the main gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. This piece was produced at the mint of Antioch in Syria. Its obverse carries the legend "CONSTANT-INVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays the emperor on horseback accompanied by the legend "ADVENTVS - AVGVSTI N".
