Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole emperor by 324. Under his authority, this coinage was struck at Antioch, the capital of Roman Syria situated on the Orontes River and one of the largest cities in the empire. The coin portrays his second son, Constantine II, who was born in 316 and proclaimed caesar by his father shortly after his birth.
