Historical context

After being proclaimed augustus at Eboracum in 306, he won the civil wars of the Tetrarchy to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. During his reign, he founded Constantinople as the new capital of the empire and enacted wide-ranging administrative, economic, and military reforms.

Struck at the mint of Antioch in Syria, this bronze issue commemorates Constantine's foundation of Constantinople. The obverse depicts a helmeted and laureate bust personifying Constantinopolis with the legend CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS, while the reverse shows a winged, draped Victory standing on a prow with a spear and shield.
