RIC VII Antioch 96. Denomination: Solidus. Authority: Constantine I. Mint: Antioch, Syria. The obverse shows bust of Constantine I, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right, with the legend CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG.

The reverse shows victory, winged, draped, advancing left, holding trophy in right hand and palm in left hand; in field to right, VOT/XXX, with the legend VICTORIA CO-NSTANTINI AVG.

Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire as emperor from AD 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole ruler by 324 after emerging victorious in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy. He enacted extensive structural and economic reforms to strengthen the empire, including the founding of Constantinople as the new capital and major administrative adjustments across the provinces.

To combat inflation, Constantine introduced the solidus in the early fourth century as a highly pure gold coin replacing the aureus. The denomination subsequently became the standard currency across Western Europe and the Byzantine Empire for centuries.
