Historical context

Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, establishing himself as sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. This coinage was produced under his imperial authority at the mint of Arelate (modern Arles), a city of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis.
