Historical context
Proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, establishing himself as sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. During his reign, Constantine reorganised the imperial government, restructured the army, and pursued extensive military campaigns along the Roman frontiers.
Struck at the mint of Arelate, this bronze issue was produced under the authority of Constantine I as an AE2 or AE3 denomination. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG". The reverse depicts a camp gate with four turrets, open doors, and a star above, paired with the legend "VIRTV-S AVGG".
