Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, rising from his proclamation as emperor at Eboracum to become the sole ruler of the empire by 324 following civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. During his reign, Constantine reorganised the imperial administration and the military, dividing the army into mobile field units and frontier-garrison forces, while also undertaking defensive campaigns along the borders.
