Historical context

After emerging victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324, he enacted widespread administrative and military reforms. Among his major undertakings was the foundation of Constantinople, which he established as the new capital of the empire.

Struck at the mint of Arelate as a bronze AE2 or AE3 piece under the authority of Constantine I, this coinage features the personification of the newly founded capital. The obverse depicts the helmeted and draped bust of Constantinopolis accompanied by the legend CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS, while the reverse depicts a winged Victory standing on a prow with a sceptre and shield.
